Our Story

Sharing your stories – Allergy Awareness Week 2014

If you are reading this you will know about Allergy Buddies well this is our own personal story

I am Sarah and mum to 3 year old Riley and we live in West Yorkshire with daddy, Sean. Riley is our own special little miracle 🙂

Riley was born on 24th April 2011 weighing a whopping 9lb 4oz. Despite the odds (a different story all together) I had a dream pregnancy and a beautiful healthy baby. I tried my very best to exclusively breast feed Riley but had to admit defeat and introduce formula as I just could not produce enough for him. He was always a grazer, I spent my life feeding him. He would only have a couple of oz an hour or would literally take 1 1/2 hour to have a 5-6oz feed. If he did drink a full feed at what I thought was ‘regular baby rate’ he would projectile vomit the most amount of milk I’d seen in my life. I should have known then something was wrong.

I started to wean him at around 19 weeks and it went so well to start with, the only thing that appeared to make him ill was baked beans. That was a reaction like something from the exorcist!! So anyway we were happily plodding along with our little man and before we knew it 17 months had passed us by. We decided to have a treat one night and had fish and chips and Riley had a really small amount as a bit of super. That night he was violently sick and the next day appeared to have a harmless cold. This went on for 6 weeks. Every time he ate he was literally sick in his high chair with the spoon still in his mouth, he would scream from 1am to 4am every night and then at 5:00am every morning violent nappy explosions. The only thing he would open his mouth for was porridge or yoghurt, not knowing I was in effect poisoning him. We had countless trips to the doctors being told it was a virus and that he had a swollen throat which was why he only wanted porridge or yoghurt. Enough became enough and with the help of my mum we realised it must be something to do with milk. So off back to the doctors who told me she would refer him for blood test but not to change his diet. I ignored this and went Lactose free and within 48 hours I had my baby back. So I went back and told my GP who agreed it was lactose intolerance. Tests came back negative as he had nothing left in his system by then.

All seemed well, then 4 weeks later BOOM off we go again. No messing this time straight back to GP who rung the hospital there and then and paediatrician said to refer us but to try Alpro Soya plus 1. That night for the first time in months he drank his bottle. He took a sip, looked at me smiled and downed the lot! It was like he’d known all that time but just couldn’t tell me. Since then we have added all dairy, eggs, tomatoes, oranges, citric acid and lactic acid. We also now suspect white fish. We have been for all the tests and nothing came back positive. Probably because back then I had no support and no body informed me not to give anti-histamine before hand. He has horrendous hayfever and it was summer so he had it every day. I know he has a mixture of Non IgE allergies and intolerance but this is through educating myself I have found this out.

So how was Allergy Buddies born from all this? Well on our first really good week we went to an Christmas party and there were wrapped chocolates for them to find. So he was bringing it to me but happy with the ‘lets save it for later’ answer knowing I could swap it when we got home. Then he came up to me seconds later eating some chocolate. Someone had unwrapped it and given it to him. I was devastated. An hour later the sickness began! So I started looking for allergy alert products. Nothing struck me as being particularity fun and friendly for children, so I started playing with ideas and found a fabulous designer and hey presto. I also started the support group as I needed some support for myself and knew others must too and I am so pleased with how the group has grown and the lovely community we have. It is a peer support group and we have a mixture of individuals, mums, dads, grandparents, aunties and uncles who all live with allergies either themselves or through another.

Well that is our story and I hope it helps you feel more connected to me, the person behind the buddies. Thanks for reading. You can follow us at

About Us

Who are we?

Allergy Buddies are custom made products to alert everyone of a child’s allergy or intolerance.

Inspiration

Ever had an instance at a crèche, party, play-gym where someone has given your child something that made them ill? Yes me too. I’m sure like me you want to keep your child safe and that is where Allergy Buddies comes in. My little chap is so far intolerant to diary, eggs and we think citric acid as well as hayfever of every description and pet allergies. So I decided to create a brand that would allow a child’s allergy/intolerance to be easily identified by any carer, teacher and other parents and to help prevent those dreaded slips.
